In July of 2026 I taught a workshop on hand-setting and printing metal type. The class description is below, as well as a few images of the class.
“Come learn the basics of the letterpress techniques that were the gold standard for printing the written word for around 500 years! In this class, you’ll learn the basics of setting metal type for printing written material, from composing to “locking up” and printing. Setting metal type letter-by-letter is a precise but satisfying process, combining the art of printmaking and the engineering developed over centuries in the vast printing industry. Participants will bring their own short line or phrase to compose using metal type, then create and print a few copies of their small typeset projects. No experience is necessary.”
