Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly

Butterfly, final version

Easy carve block, two blocks with one reduction block

Another experiment with reduction printing, this time using the pin/tab registration system, with (obviously) more consistent results than the cave salamanders. My original intention was to print a blue gradient background on one block and a black outline, reducing to red spots on another block, but I didn’t like how the black looked on top of the blue.

I pivoted to try white on blue and didn’t mind how that looked, though I forgot the antennae wouldn’t really show up too well.

I carved the second block down further, leaving just the spots and the antennae, hoping that might save me! I didn’t entirely love it, so I messed around adding a grid of dots using a Lego base-plate and some stamp ink, which seemed to ultimately tie it all together enough for my liking.
